Tambopata Rainforest Tour - 5 days

ITINERARY CODE: TAMB04

Our five-day tour to Tambopata is custom designed to meet the expectations of our clients. This tour includes part of the Tambopata national reserve at the edge of the forest with the Tambopata River which offers excellent opportunities for spotting wild life.
Tambopata nature tour is unique because it is located in a vast rain forested region untouched by man.

NOTE: The program involves several trips by bus and boat, and so given the uncontrollable forces of nature, the program may be subject to change at any time without notice.

Day 01: Puerto Maldonado – Monte Amazonico Tambopata Lodge
The first day of our trip, the shuttle will pick you up at your point of entry (the airport or bus terminal) in Puerto Maldonado town. From there, we’ll continue about 48 km in our private vehicle on a paved road, then 18 km along a dirt road to the shore of the Tambopata River. Here we connect with our motorboat that will bring us to the lodge. Once you’ve settled in, we’ll enjoy dinner and, later, embark on a guided evening hike in search of amphibians, reptiles, nocturnal animals and insects. Then it’s early to bed because tomorrow it’s early to rise.
Overnight in Monte Amazonico Tambopata Lodge

Day 02: Monte Amazonico Tambopata Lodge – Chuncho Clay Lick (Macaw Clay Lick)
At 4:30 a.m. we leave by motorized boat and drive upstream for about an hour and a half. Along the misty river, we can observe impressive wildlife, like a group of capybaras sitting on the edge of the forest, or perhaps a majestic jungle cat, the jaguar (Panthera onca), or hopefully spot the largest mammal in the Amazon, the tapir. After an exciting boat ride, we’ll view one of the most beautiful places in the jungle and a hallmark of Tambopata – the macaw clay lick - where parrots, parakeets and rainbow colored macaw make vibrant displays while savoring the mineral rich clay.
Overnight in Monte Amazonico Tambopata Lodge

Day 03: Monte Amazonico Tambopata Lodge – Mammal Clay Lick
After a well-deserved breakfast, our plan for today is to explore the pristine forest on foot. There, many surprises await us: huge ancient trees with wall-like roots, wild hanging vines, giant palm trees, and primordial ferns. Sounds of birds and monkeys in the treetops abound. We visit a clay lick that attracts mammals. Here, with luck, we can find peccaries, spider or howler monkeys, or even an agouti. At noon we return to the lodge for a delicious lunch, then rest for a few hours in hammocks or admire the many butterflies before you fish for piranhas later in the afternoon. (At night we again offer wildlife hikes)

Day 04: Monte Amazonico Tambopata Lodge – Monte Amazonico Sandoval Lodge
Today we return to the city of Puerto Maldonado the same way we came. At the port of Captainia we transfer to a motor boat and travel down the river for about an hour. After we land, we walk for two hours through primary forest to Lake Sandoval, perhaps the most famous lake of the reserve. Here we see a great diversity of flora and fauna. Quietly we traverse the waters in catamaran to enjoy Tambopata’s treasures: endangered giant river otters, prehistoric “Hoatzin” birds, and white and black caimans, among much more flora and fauna. Tonight we’ll stay in a lodge near Lake Sandoval, so we’ll have a unique opportunity to go in search of caiman, frogs, and snakes found in few areas of the world.

Day 05: Lake Sandoval – Terminal or airport
Our last day in the jungle will start with a beautiful sunrise on Lake Sandoval. After breakfast we return to the city of Puerto Maldonado, transferring you to either the bus station or airport. We thank you for choosing Manu Rainforest Tours and hope you enjoyed your trip with us.
